What is Cannabigerol (CBG)?

Last Updated on August 20, 2021 by Maxwell Harris

Most people who are concerned with cannabis and its cannabinoids focus on the active ingredient THC. This is an active ingredient that we know from the use of marijuana. This causes a state similar to intoxication due to its psychoactive effect, can cause perceptual disturbances and is also addictive. Anyone who has ever smoked marijuana knows what is meant by this…

But the cannabis plant, also has numerous other cannabinoids to offer, which bring numerous health benefits through their unique compositions. CBD, for example, is one of these cannabinoids. The active ingredient is already sold in the form of oil, crystals, liquids, etc., and can do a lot for our health.

CBG, or cannabigerol, is also a compound that holds great medicinal potential and could be useful in treating many different diseases. For example, CBG could be used to relieve nausea, pain, or even the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

What exactly is Cannabigerol?

Cannabigerol is known by the abbreviation CBG and is a so-called phytocannabinoid extracted from the cannabis plant. Studies have shown that CBG is not psychoactive. Intoxication effects and addiction can therefore be ruled out.

CBG was discovered in 1964. CBG consists of cannabigerolic acid or CBGA, which is one of the first cannabinoids of a growing hemp plant. When the hemp plant matures, its enzymes convert into many other cannabinoid acids. Most cannabinoids subsequently evolve through drying, heating, or curing into their versions, which are referred to as non-acidic. Among them you can find for example CBD, CBC or THC.

Through studies, it is now believed that CBG is a weak antagonist of the so-called CB1 receptor and can therefore inhibit the effects of THC. Effects of other cannabinoids can therefore be suppressed by CBG.

The incredible potential of CBG

Even though CBG has not yet been researched as much as one would like, it has already been found that CBG brings numerous positive properties for health.

A particularly important point is the treatment of cancer. Thus one could find out by some studies that CBG oil could help also with many cancer types. Especially in the case of colorectal cancer, studies have shown a positive effect. For example, the cannabinoid could significantly inhibit the growth of tumors. Studies have also shown success with skin cancer. The melanoma cells could be reduced in mice, for example. It can therefore be assumed today that CBG could be useful for many different types of cancer.

Multiple sclerosis

CBG also has unique neuroprodective properties. For example, the compound could be particularly helpful in Huntington’s disease and MS. People suffering from multiple sclerosis, for example, could be helped by CBG, which could alleviate symptoms and perhaps even prevent relapses. Again, this will take a study or two, but what we know so far sounds promising!

Relieving pain

Just like CBD, CBG can also relieve pain. Neuropathic pain, in particular, could be alleviated by the compound. Pain caused by nerve damage could thus be improved by CBG. In addition, it is believed that CBG, like CBD, could also help with menstrual cramps, headaches, migraines, etc. Cannabigerol could also facilitate the treatment of nausea and vomiting, as well as inflammation. Thus, CBG practically offers very similar positive aspects for health as CBD already does.

Where can CBG be found?

Most of the cannabis we grow today is used for the extraction of THC or CBD. Thus, the plants are harvested very late in their flowering phase. As a result, they have a very low concentration of CBG. In most cases, these plants contain only about 1 percent of CBG. However, Indian landrace hemp in particular might have a higher concentration than most varieties.

CBG can be bought online from most cannabinoid and CBD online shops. Just like CBD, it is available in the form of capsules, oil or the popular CBG crystals.

CBG and medicine

It is now more than obvious that CBG holds great medicinal potential. Just like CBD, CBG does not contain any intoxicating effects, which makes it an excellent drug to use. Nevertheless, one should keep in mind that research on this point is still in its infancy and certainly needs some time before CBG can and will be used in medicine. We do not yet know all the positive and negative properties that the active ingredient brings with it!

Conclusion

Whoever hears of cannabigerol will certainly first think of the cannabis plant and its intoxicating effect. However, not all cannabinoids contain a psychoactive effect. Just as CBD does not contain this effect, CBG does not contain anything of the sort. Therefore, it is also a very interesting substance for science and especially for medicine, which will certainly play a major role in the future. Today, for example, it is known that CBD as well as CBG, can relieve pain, eliminate inflammation and even solve anxiety. Cannabinoids can therefore also be used for depression and anxiety disorders.

Those who have already experienced the positive effects of CBD, will be just as satisfied with CBG. It basically brings the same properties as CBD and already has great importance in medicine and alternative medicine.
